Music for ballet class is traditionally played on the piano, but originally class exercises were accompanied by a solo violin. With this historical precedent in mind, this CD intends to present its users with a modern approach to ballet music. All of the music on this CD is therefore performed on the bass clarinet, whose deep and mellow sounds give the exercises a well-rounded sensation that translates well into a wide range of movements. With its four entire octaves, the bass clarinet is versatile enough to mix the strict requirements of ballet with other musical genres. Many of the pieces are therefore free improvisations over melodies originating from jazz, blues, folk music and even pop ballads.

about

This music can be used for all levels of ballet class. These exercises are a result of two years of creative collaboration, where both musical expression and the needs of classical ballet have been blended into a user-friendly and fun combination. By providing a new twist to old themes, this music is therefore a good supplement to a collection of more traditional ballet music. It brings a quirky element to the music, thus making it suitable for both teaching in class, as well as for individual training sessions at home.

BIOGRAPHY
Allan Nielsen was educated at the Royal Danish Theatre Ballet School in Copenhagen, Denmark, but has also trained at John Neumeier’s Ballet School of the Hamburg Ballet in Germany. He was employed as a principal dancer in Tivoli at the Pantomime Theatre from 1984 to 2003. At the moment Allan is pursuing a career as a character dancer at the Pantomime Theatre, while at the same time dedicating time to his work as a teacher of classical ballet.
Allan has taught at Scania’s Dance Theatre, the Danish Dance Theatre in addition to teaching regularly at the Royal Swedish Ballet School and he is currently employed at the Royal Danish Theatre Ballet School as an assistant teacher. Just recently, Allan has become co-owner of Christianshavn’s Ballet School, where he enjoys introducing children to the world of ballet. Allan is fond of teaching all levels of ballet; regardless whether he is teaching children or pensioners, amateurs or professionals, Allan seeks to give his pupils a sense of organic flow that allows everyone to experience dance as a union of music and movement.
Anders Banke studied the saxophone and clarinet at the Rythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, Denmark. He plays in a wide variety of groups from the Danish jazz scene, including Pierre Dørge’s New Jungle Orchestra, Anderskov Accident, Mold,Mark Solborg Quartet, Pasborg’s Odessa 5 and Copenhagen Art Ensemble. In addition to his performances on stage, Anders also writes music for his band called ‘Spring’, teaches at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory and is a member of the Copenhagen-based record label cooperative ILK.
As a performer, Anders seeks to touch his listeners by using music to express a story and in that way communicate more directly with his audience. Anders’ music is driven by powerful emotion and energy that every now and then presents his listeners with unexpected twists and turns.
